An introduction to the role of a CCA through the social philosophy of care, CCA Scope of Practice, professional responsibilities, and professional qualities and behaviours of a CCA.

Learn how to understand effective interpersonal communication practices for CCAs, including different types of professional relationships and appropriate forms of interpersonal communication in the care setting.

Learn about the various forms of written communication required of CCAs and the appropriate uses of technology by CCAs inside and outside of care settings.

Develop a basic understanding of the normal structure and function of the body with an introduction to common health issues and implications for care.

Overview of the principles of body movement and safety during direct and indirect assistance activities, and how to position and transfer individuals.

Develop skills including basic safety, cleanliness, organization, task prioritization, and time management that are required in a care setting.

Course Timeline
Skills Placements
Practice the skills you have learned in class in weeks 1 to 18. You will be supervised by one of the CCA instructors (RNs or LPNs) while you are in the long-term care facilities.
Work Placements
Work closely with mentors who are already CCAs. You do the work of a CCA with your mentor's help and guidance.

Our Continuing Care Assistant Certificate program requires an Academic IELTS of 6.0 (no band below 6.0), an Oxford ELLT Level 6 overall (no band below 6), or one of the following:
- The Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT) 8
- TOEFL IBT 78
- Halifax's in-person UCP Level 400
If your English language levels don't meet the program criteria, you can sign up for one of our programs at the Oxford International Halifax English Language School before applying to the CCA Certificate program.
However, applicants who are able to demonstrate 2 years of full-time academic study in select countries where the language of instruction was English are exempt from supplying an English proficiency exam for admission into the CCA Certificate program at OICH.

Our Continuing Care Assistant Certificate Program is designed to provide graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to deliver appropriate, timely and respectful person-focused care to individuals. Our program offers a unique, blended approach to training that combines technical, employability, and other essential skills.
Placements may occure in a variety of settings, including Home Care, Nursing Homes/Homes for the Aged, Acute Care facilites, and other approved care settings that employ CCAs.
